Nokia VS HTC (London 2010)

Nokia World 2010 took place in London this week during Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th.

Hundreds of spectators attended the various events during both days BUT .. on Wednesday 15th HTC organized a press conference in London aswell.;)

HTC people were kind enough to even arrange free transportation from Nokia World to the HTC event. :)

Nokia on the other hand implemented a brilliant "guerilla" activity targeting the journalists leaving for the HTC event. An elegant Nokia Survival kit was distributed including the following:

  • Ham, Tomato & Cheese Sandwich (H - T - C)
  • An energy bar
  • A giant “Nokia” foam finge (for Q & As)
  • Pen and pan
  • Ear plugs and eye-mask in case someone wanted to take a brief nap

- Energy bar to keep you awake
- Got "hands on" with a nice HTC but now you feel a bit "dirty" - here are some hand cleanex
- Energy Bar didn't work ... too bad.. take a nap and dream of ... a Nokia N8 (lol) :P

Mobile Application segment increases rapidly

According to the latest edition of The Nielsen Company’s Apps Playbook, the average number of apps that smartphone app downloaders have on their phones is now 27, up from 22 in December 2009.

Broken down by the three major operating systems (Apple’s iOS, Android and Blackberry), owners of iPhones have the most apps with an average of 40 on their phones, up from 37 last December, while Android owners report having 25 apps on their phones (up from 22 last December) and BlackBerry owners report having 14 (up from 10).

Games continue to be the most popular category by far, with 61% of smartphone owners and 52% of feature phone owners reporting using a games app in the past 30 days.

Weather apps are the next most popular category. But while all categories of applications are more popular on smartphones than on feature phones, the difference is more pronounced in categories such as Maps/Navigation, where more computing power, larger screens and touch interfaces deliver a more satisfying experience.

Facebook is the most popular individual app on all of the major operating systems. Twitter is among the top five only on the BlackBerry, perhaps because the device’s physical keyboard is optimized for typing. And while YouTube is popular on Android and Windows Mobile, it doesn’t make the top five on either the iPhone or BlackBerry operating systems.

With the ongoing growth in popularity of connected devices such as touchscreen tablets, eReaders and media players, mobile apps are likely to flourish beyond phones and on these devices as well. Games are the most popular app category on all connected devices, just as they are on smartphones and feature phones, while the iPod Touch currently leads all connected devices in apps downloads.

Note 1: Where is Nokia in this chart?
Note 2: News applications will grow in number of the next couple of years.
Note 3: Really now... Facebook on all 3 platforms tops the lists? :(

The fight against racism gets personal

The debate over building a new mosque close to the site of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Centre has divided Americans and initiated a new round of anti-Muslim racism and fear.

Now, a grassroots coalition of American Muslim groups launched a collaborative project, ”My Faith, My Voice”, in which everyday Muslims from all walks of life post videos on YouTube to let their countrymen know what they’re really all about.

Why you should never ask favors from a graphic designer

    Story goes...

Shannon (the secretary) has lost her cat and has asked David (the graphic designer) to help with a lost poster.

    This is their email correspondence...

    Read from top to bottom….

    From: Shannon Walkley
    Date: Monday 21 June 2010 9.15am
    To: David Thorne
    Subject: Poster

    Hi
I opened the screen door yesterday and my cat got out and has been missing since then so I
was wondering if you are not to busy you could make a poster for me. It has to be A4 and I
will photocopy it and put it around my neighborhood this afternoon.

This is the only photo of her I have she answers to the name Missy and is black and white and
about 8 months old. missing on Harper street and my phone number.
    Thanks Shan.

    To: Shannon Walkley
    Subject: Re: Poster

    Dear Shannon,
    That is shocking news.
Although I have two clients expecting completed work this afternoon, I will, of course, drop
everything and do whatever it takes to facilitate the speedy return of Missy.
    Regards, David.

yeah ok thanks. I know you dont like cats but I am really worried about mine. I have to leave
    at 1pm today.

    To: Shannon Walkley
    Subject: Re: Re: Re: Poster

    Dear Shannon,
I never said I don't like cats. Attached poster as requested.

    Regards, David.

yeah thats not what I was looking for at all. it looks like a movie and how come the photo of
    Missy is so small?

    From: David Thorne
    Date: Monday 21 June 2010 10.28am
    To: Shannon Walkley
Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Poster

    Dear Shannon,
It's a design thing. The cat is lost in the negative space.
    Regards, David.

    Date: Monday 21 June 2010 10.33am
    To: David Thorne
Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Poster

Thats just stupid. Can you do it properly please? I am extremely emotional over this and was
up all night in tears. you seem to think it is funny. Can you make the photo bigger please and
fix the text and do it in colour please. Thanks.

    From: David Thorne
    Date: Monday 21 June 2010 10.46am
    To: Shannon Walkley
Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Poster

    Dear Shannon,
Having worked with designers for a few years now, I would have assumed you understood, despite our vague suggestions otherwise, we do not welcome constructive criticism. I don't come downstairs and tell you how to send text messages, log onto Facebook and look out of the window. I have amended and attached the poster as per your instructions.
    Regards, David.

    Date: Monday 21 June 2010 10.59am
    To: David Thorne
Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Poster

This is worse than the other one. can you make it so it shows the whole photo of Missy and
delete the stupid text that says missing missy off it? I just want it to say Lost.

Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Poster

yeah can you do the poster or not? I just want a photo and the word lost and the telephone
number and when and where she was lost and her name. Not like a movie poster or anything
stupid. I have to leave early today. If it was your cat I would help you. Thanks.

    From: David Thorne

    Dear Shannon,
I don't have a cat. I once agreed to look after a friend's cat for a week but after he dropped it
off at my apartment and explained the concept of kitty litter. I have attached the amended
version of your poster as per your detailed instructions.
    Regards, David.

    of my cat.

    To: Shannon Walkley
    Subject: Re: Re: Awww

I know, but that one is cute. As Missy has quite possibly met any one of several violent ends,
it is possible you might get a better cat out of this. If anybody calls and says "I haven't seen
your orange cat but I did find a black and white one with its hind legs run over by a car, do
you want it?" you can politely decline and save yourself a costly veterinarian bill.
    Regards, David.
